Cracking the code of William Basinski's The Disintegration Loops - the original loops (???)

Cracking the Code of The Disintegration Loops William Basinski’s The Disintegration Loops is a big favourite of mine! It’s a mesmerizing listen, a masterfully melancholic piece. Listening to it – with fully acknowledging the bottom line (the deterioration of the tapes as a display of passing) - slowly I became interested and curious about the original source/s of the loops. How could they sound originally...? This is what we know about the recordings from interviews and articles: Recorded: 1982 "In 1980, we moved to New York, and there was this radio station on top of the Empire State Building, and it played American popular standards—101 Strings versions, pretty much. So with just the wires running around our loft in downtown Brooklyn, the sounds of this muzak would come creeping in. I’d started trying to make my own mellotron by taking randomly shaped loops and putting them on the tape deck on high speed-- recording a little bit of the string intro and outro to these songs, and then slowing them down and seeing what I had. In those days there was no Prozac; there were much better drugs. And there was muzak, and it was everywhere, and you just floated along. But if you took a little bit of it, and slowed it down, like looking at a microscope, you got this incredible melancholy." “Many of the loops were “basically Muzak” being broadcast from the top of the Empire State Building. They were all the Mancini and Mantovani versions of the American popular standards with all the syncopation taken out: no lyrics, unless there were oohs and aahs and just string galore.“ “He further treated the sounds with a spatializing reverb effect.” “slowed-down and repeated portions of Muzak tapes, pushed by the composer until they attain eerie beauty.” What I did: I set a much much faster tempo on the loops with a varispeed effect. Thus - besides the speed - the musical key has also changed. I simply tried to find (or getting closer) to the original speed/key of these loops, just by listening to the instruments. Besides this I also heavily EQ-ed the recordings to find more “buried” details and instrument lines. Here are the results, enjoy! Do you think these could be the originals? In running order: 1. "dlp 1.1" fast tempo, EQ-ed 2. "dlp 2.1" fast tempo, EQ-ed 3. "dlp 3" fast tempo, EQ-ed 4. "dlp 4" fast tempo, EQ-ed 5. "dlp 5" fast tempo, EQ-ed 6. "dlp 6" fast tempo, EQ-ed The picture is an old drawing of mine, from 1983. Update (10.10.2023): My favorites are "dlp 3", "dlp 4" and "dlp 6"! At this fast speed, you can hear the crash cymbal (dlp 3), the hi hat cymbals (dlp 6) and complete drums and piano (dlp 4). Does anybody have a guess which was the original "muzak" song? (of any of the 6 tracks!)
