2024 Subaru WRX TR Review: A Car at a Crossroads

Let's test drive and review the 2024 Subaru WRX TR! This WRX TR makes 271 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque from a turbocharged 2.4-liter, four-cylinder boxer engine. That power goes through a six-speed manual transmission to all four wheels through Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system. The base 2024 WRX starts at $33,000 in the American market, and there are five trims of the car. The TR is the fourth-most expensive with a starting price of $41,655, and it’s the most expensive WRX trim you can get with a manual transmission. The trim above it, which is the $44,000 GT, is only available with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Subaru WRX launched in Japan in 1992 as AWD rally monster with a turbo-4. “WRX” stood for “World Rally eXperimental,” and that meant Subaru was about to kick up some major dust in the world of rallying. The Subaru team won championship after championship in rally, and the cars’ iconic blue-and-yellow liveries remain a staple of the brand. The WRX has been through five generations since, and for the first three generations, the WRX was part of Subaru’s Impreza model line. The WRX became its own nameplate after that, and this car, the fifth gen, debuted in 2021 for the 2022 model year. People had mixed feelings when the new WRX debuted, mainly because it has black plastic cladding all over it, making it look kind of like a shrunken Subaru Crosstrek. Back in the day, “TR” meant “Tuner Ready.” It was a stripped-down, less-expensive WRX, and the idea was that Subaru would sell you a bare-bones WRX that you could immediately modify. In comparison, the modern TR is really fancy. But the TR is really all we’ve got right now, because Subaru's STI performance nameplate is gone, at least temporarily. STI stands for “Subaru Tecnica International,” and it’s the famous badge you see on a lot of WRXes to denote that they’re the hardcore ones. Subaru launched STI in 1988, a few years before the WRX debuted, as its performance and motorsports division. The STI became a beloved version of the WRX, but Subaru said it won't be on the fifth gen. The company said early on: "Subaru Corporation is exploring opportunities for the next generation Subaru WRX STI, including electrification. In the meantime, an internal combustion engine WRX STI will not be produced based upon the new WRX platform." That means the Subaru WRX is likely about to change forever. We don't know how exactly, yet, but it'll be fascinating to see. Thanks for watching my YouTube channel.
