Today’s feature was the definition of a natural athlete with all the physical tools to be a cornerstone player for a franchise. That franchise was thought to be the Clippers when they took Al Thornton 14th overall and the last lottery pick in a highlighted 2007 draft class for its good and its bad. Thornton became an all rookie performer after his first season, giving the Clippers high hopes they selected a sleeper at the end of the lottery. In his first and second year Al was having a better career than arguably any pick in front of him not named Kevin Durant, and looked primed to take the tweener forward position to new heights. What I liked most about Al’s game was he made up for all his deficiencies by having one of the most explosive first steps, and once he got by you there was no stopping his athletic finishes at the rim. For any team looking for a wing that seemed tailor made for transition, up and down basketball look no further. I as many, were shocked to see the clippers trade him mid way through his third season, but at the time the clippers were in complete rebuild mode and soon figured out Al Thornton for them, wasn’t it. His next team the Wizards found that out quick after 73 games and the Warriors in just 22. All bottom feeding teams at that time that Thornton should’ve made great strides with and become one of their key pieces going forward. Instead his NBA career lasted just 4 years with 3 different teams before embarking on his overseas journey at 27 years old and entering what should be a basketball player’s prime.
