(18 Feb 1998) English/Nat A further flight of F-117 'Stealth' bombers arrived on Tuesday in Kuwait, augmenting the already considerable U-S military presence in the Gulf. Having given Washington permission to utilise its air bases, Kuwait is also continuing preparations for possible hostilities and retaliation by Iraq. Another shipment of gas masks arrived in Kuwait on Wednesday while security has been boosted both at key oil refineries and on the streets of Kuwait city in case of terrorist-style attacks. The stealth bombers which arrived in Kuwait on Tuesday join an already considerable U-S force. Around 10-thousand American ground troops are already in the region or are on their way. Also present is a veritable armada of ships and warplanes. For the U-S troops, their mission is clear. SOUNDBITE: (English) "The jets are here to support the U-S and the U-N against Iraq to make them back down and comply with the resolutions that came out of the Gulf War." SUPER CAPTION: Lieutenant Colonel Gary Waltering, Commander 8th Fighter Squadron But problems of security remain. Since the Persian Gulf war, the United States has improved the Patriot missiles that proved ineffective against Iraqi Scuds during the 1991 Gulf War. But giving the United States the go-ahead to use it as a base poses certain difficulties for this small Gulf state. On Wednesday, 10-thousand gas masks arrived from Korea for Kuwaiti troops and government officials. But residents fear that should Baghdad attack with chemical or biological weapons, the chances of most of the 2.2 (m) million population would be slim. At refineries such as this one, there are plans in case of attack. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Our preparation here is within an overall preparation of Kuwait. At the same time we have our own plans within the refinery which is part and parcel of the daily operation to handle any industrial incident. So that plan will be applied in case, God forbid, there is an attack in the refinery." SUPER CAPTION: Hussein Ismail, Manager of Operations at oil refinery But statement by Iraq, which has called Kuwait's decision to host U-S warplanes a "deadly mistake," have done little to reassure most ordinary Kuwaitis. Those who are most worried appear to be people who experienced the trauma of Iraq's invasion and seven-month occupation at the beginning of the decade.
