Lada Classic 1987 Kenilworth Road Luton Highlights of Earlier Matches & GB Men v Pakistan 1st Part

Continuing our look back at vintage men's hockey from the Lada Classic at Kenilworth Road, Luton in Autumn 1987 as GB men begin preparations for the 1988 Seoul Olympics a year later. This video from BBC Two (Sunday afternoon live at the time) features highlights of the earlier matches and the Tournament decider between GB and Pakistan. Watch out for glimpses of the great Shahbaz Ahmed, the wonderful Pakistan player who was to electrify World Hockey in the early 1990's, as he begins his career. Sean Kerly, too, is in devastating form in front of goal and others who were to become household names a year later: Jon Potter, Steve Batchelor, Richard Dodds and Ian Taylor to name but four. There is a also a strong Irish contingent in this squad, 2 of whom were to be an integral part of the 1988 team: Stephen Martin and Jimmy Kirkwood. Billy McConnell and Kenny Morris, who played at Luton, didn't make the final cut a year later. It is fascinating looking back on the styles of goalkeeping! Charging at Penalty Corners was still used by many teams, whereas we were evolving towards more of a "logging" technique. Charging around the circle in open play is also evident and a few goals are scored with the goalkeeper hopelessly out of position! Sit back and enjoy a snippet of 1980's hockey....
