Talking Tech series: Women and Girls in ICT series in support of Girls in ICT Day 2020-2022 Maria Luciana Axente, Responsible AI and AI for Good Lead at PwC UK, interviewed by Afoma Ukah, MSc Management of Information Systems & Digital Innovation Student at the University of Warwick. Maria is an expert in AI ethics and leads the implementation of AI ethics in PwC UK. Her journey in technology started a few years back. Maria grew up in a small village in Transylvania, very determined to join military school and become a fighter jet pilot but to her surprise, military schools in Romania were not accepting girls at the time, so she went on to a computer science high school and started studying computer science at the age of 14. This is really when her journey in technology started, since she was able to develop logical thinking and understanding of computer science and programming beyond writing code. After high school, Maria wanted to delve further into business and attended one of the leading universities in Bucharest, only to realise that tech would follow her closely in every job she had. As Maria so eloquently stated, "technology was always there to showcase how much progress and how much value you can add by using technology in a meaningful way". From her executive assistant job to her career managing business, tech was always there. Eleven years ago, Maria decided to start an MBA focusing on strategy and corporate governance, and knew that alongside that she always wanted to work in a consultancy specialized in technology, pushing her to join Cognizant Technology Solutions. Here she had the chance for the first time to work on technology related projects like the implementation of various type of tech, from mobile applications to CRM or ERP platforms, and more. In just 2.5 years she was exposed to so much of the tech world, and once she moved to PwC she understood just how immersed she was in the tech world and how valuable that experience was. She used that experience in her consulting projects in PwC and applied it to the expanded world of AI. Maria was interviewed by Afoma, who previously worked at PwC in Nigeria as an economic and industry analyst. During her time there she was focused on blockchain technology research which guided her to do a Master’s degree in Management of Information Systems & Digital Innovation at the University of Warwick.
