CSI: Mexican Wolf Experimental Population Area.

The Wolf Conservation Center hosted Greta Anderson of Western Watersheds Project on March 27, 2024 for a webinar discussing the impact of secretive federal agencies on Mexican gray wolf recovery. Greta talks about the yearslong efforts to retrieve, understand, and expose the inadequacies (and fallacies) of livestock depredation reports by USDA's Wildlife Services. This effort led to reform in the agencies and a subsequent decline in reports of Mexican gray wolf predation on livestock, leading also to fewer wolf removals for conflict with livestock. Greta's presentation walks the public through examples of these investigations, the causes and consequences of faulty reporting, and the ongoing efforts to ensure Mexican gray wolves aren't being unfairly blamed for livestock deaths. Content warning: the presentation includes graphic images of wounded and killed livestock ABOUT THE SPEAKER Greta has worked with Western Watersheds Project since 2007. She has degrees in geography and ethnobotany, a background in traditional herbalism, and has a deep interest in issues of social and environmental justice. She lives on the lands of the Tohono O'Odham people in what is now called Tucson, Arizona. https://www.westernwatersheds.org/ ABOUT THE WOLF CONSERVATION CENTER The Wolf Conservation Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit environmental education organization committed to conserving wolf populations in North America through science-based education programming and participation in the federal Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE) Programs for the critically endangered Mexican gray wolf and red wolf.
