1. Random Variable A random variable is a real valued function defined on a sample space S of an experiment. In other words, to each one of the outcomes of an experiment or a sample point E, of the sample spaces, there corresponds a unique real number xi, known as the value of the random variable X. 2. Discrete Random Variable A random variable is said to be discrete if it take only a finite or an infinite but countable number of values. 3. Properties of DRV If p(x) is a probability function of a random variable X, then it possesses the following properties: 1. p (x) is positive for all value of x. 2. Total of all values of p(x) for different x is always 1. 3. p(x) measures the probability for any given value of x. 4. p(x) cannot be negative for any value of x.
