Bio: Dr. Xiangming Xiao is a professor of ecology and remote sensing at the University of Oklahoma. His interdisciplinary research interests include land use and land cover change, terrestrial carbon cycle, agriculture, forestry, climate, water resources, disease ecology, and OneHealth. Talk Abstract: Land use and land cover change (LULCC), together with climate change, have fundamentally altered the biosphere and Earth system composition, structure, and function. Rich satellite data and computing resources empower our society to better characterize and understand LULCC across scales from local to global. In this seminar, first, he will introduce recent advances in LULCC data products, based on knowledge-based mapping algorithms. Second, he will showcase several studies that report multi-decade land cover changes and their driving factors. Third, he will discuss the impacts of LULCC on the carbon cycle, climate, zoonotic infectious diseases, and socio-ecological systems sustainability.
