Ice Cave at Königssee Glacier Eiskapelle! 4K

The so-called ice chapel (ice cave) made from waterfalls flowing through a glacier! In German it is also known as the Eiskapelle Watzmann. Watzmann is the mountain (eastern facing side) this glacier field is on, in the Berchtesgaden Alps south of the village of Berchtesgaden and close to the village of Königssee by boat and an hour intermediate hike from the church at St. Bartholomä. "The Eiskapelle may well be the lowest-lying permanent snowfield in the Alps. Its lower end is only 930 metres high in the upper Eisbach valley…” source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watzman... This adventure takes about 4 hours depending on how much time you spend up at the ice caves by the glacier. This is only possible in the summer. In the winter the snow field is much bigger and it is challenging to reach the ice caves or Eiskapelle. It is a moderate hike and requires a good amount of scrambling once you get to the glacier field and is relatively rough terrain. The year-round part of the glacier rises majestically up to around 1,800 meters above the St. Bartholomä peninsula on the legendary Watzmann mountain on its east face. At the foot of the cliffs are located two glaciers and the ice chapel. The largest one in German is know as the Eiskapelle. This one is at about 900 meters and the lowest glacier in Germany! The geology in this area is already stunning and then add in an ice cave. Wow, what a hike! The ice chapel is the lowest, year-round ice field in the German Alps and is fed by the avalanche snow from the east face. Inside the so-called "firn ice" there is a large cavity, which is why the ice chapel takes its name. Firn is the transitional material between fresh snow and the much denser, more compact glacial ice, playing a critical role in the formation and dynamics of glaciers and ice sheets. The entrance resembles a glacier gate, or better said a cave that can only be seen in the summer months. The ice caves are stunning and there is a micro-climate up there by the glacier, which was very refreshing on a hot summers day. We visited the glacier and ice chapel in August of 2024. The size of the snowfield, glacier area and such as certainly shrieked. Yet this glacier is largely formed by snow falling off of the cliff face of the higher mountain. Meaning it varies greatly, depending on snow fall. That said, higher temperatures in general mean the glacier ice melts faster each summer. You can see from my 2009 photographs of the ice field, compared to the 2024 pictures of the glacier area, that it is a lot smaller. In another video I cover how to hike to the ice caves or Eiskapelle at Königssee. #Königssee #Glacier #Eiskapelle I also show the report on the ice chapel and the glacier titled, “Accumulation rates and snow redistribution processes at the Ice chapel, Berchtesgaden Alps” which you can read in full here: https://www.researchgate.net/publicat... Königssee is lovely and this was a truly adventurous hiking experience, providing a touch of alpine climbing! Enjoy the ice caves and the Königssee Glacier, the Eiskapelle! A true Bavarian and German Alps experience not to be missed!
