China - Cab Ride in JS Class 2-8-2 (2) - December 2016

This was my second cab ride of the recent visit to Sandaoling in western China. The train leaves the opencast mining area with its newly loaded train of coal and battles the steep incline out of the mine area, passing an empty train on its way back down to the loading area. We then unload the coal at a transfer station where the coal is crudely broken down into smaller pieces and loaded on to lorries. Experiences like this are now in their last few months. This is absolutely the final chance in the world to witness a steam locomotive being driven hard in a genuine industrial situation. This sequence is the end of my visit to Sandaoling and also the end of a whole era in steam power. For those who can afford it - you have just a few months to see this spectacle.
