Social Service Camp- Wabgaon| Batch 2021| Anoushka Sakpal

We had our Social Service Camp from 7th October 2022 to 19th October 2022. At MGIMS, we follow a village adoption scheme wherein we look after the villagers for three years and take care about all their medical needs. The village chosen was Wabgoan which was 37km away from the college. There, we had a fixed schedule right from 8am to 10pm and sometimes beyond 10pm as well! At the end of the day we would be so exhausted that we won’t even realised when did we fall asleep! A journal was given to us and we were supposed to fill all the essential details of our family members and their problems. We focused more on the problems at a community level. We were also supposed to complete forms and fill data entries. There were several guests invited during the duration of the camp. Dr. Dharav Shah (MD Psych. Mumbai) and Dr. Arun Agarwal (HOD community medicine at PGIMER Chandigarh) were some of them. We not only interacted with the policy makers of the village but also helped in decision making. This camp taught me to value what I have and be grateful. We got to learn about so many things. We along with our interns and specialists were handling OPD. This camp gave me an opportunity to work like a doctor. When we had field visits, we were called doctors. Inspite of being in the first year, we had gotten a sense of responsibility. We were respected and our opinions mattered. For the first time in my life, I was treated like an adult and my inputs in the decision making policy were appreciated. I was able to conduct sessions for the teenagers of the village. I learnt team work and the importance of group work. I got to work upon my soft skills and also learnt about the power of being a good listener. Social service camp was not just any other medical camp, it was very well structured and beautifully executed. All the OPD treatments along with medications were free of cost. We also conducted several events for the villagers. We were awestruck by their enthusiasm and excitement. They were very keen to learn and practice good hygiene. Social service camp 2021 was truly a great success. I would like to thank all the Community Medicine teachers and PGs for giving us this wonderful opportunity and memories which we would cherish throughout our life. Brief history- this camp is very peculiar. It happens only in MGIMS and it has been happening since the last 53 years.
