'Ecole des Sables', or 'The School in the Sand' was founded in 1996 by Germaine Acogny as a platform for African dance. Acogny, a Senegalese dancer and widely regarded as the mother of African Contemporary dance, believes that dance is the most powerful form of expression. A choreographer, dancer and teacher, Acogny is also responsible for establishing 'The Acogny technique', her signature dance style. Miranda Atty dropped by the school to see how the next generation of dancers are learning what it means to be contemporary African dancers.
