1.1 - Introduction to the Subject (English)

The subject "Strength of Materials" can be seen to be the study of four major types of loading conditions and their corresponding deformations of slightly flexible bodies. These can be seen as simple "pulling/pushing" (technical name - axial loading), "twisting" (technical name - torsion) and "bending" operations. When a slender body is under compression an interesting type of deformation can happen. That is called "buckling." In order to study all these types of deformations, a deeper understanding of the concepts of stresses, strains and material properties is built.
