Dynamic micro-CT – Compression of Aluminum Foam

Metal foams play an important role in our lives and are used in a wide range of applications, from energy dissipation (safety) to energy-saving (light-weighting). When metal foams are an integral part of a structure the mechanical characteristics and their response to external load need to be well understood. Insight into how these structures deform under specific loading conditions is essential to many research fields but is often challenging due to the foam’s complex geometric nature and the need to visualize them in 3D as they undergo change. In this experiment, we use TESCAN UniTOM XL micro-CT to capture the full three-dimensional deformation of an open-cell aluminum foam as it is being continuously compressed. TESCAN UniTOM XL allows for fast continuous acquisition during uninterrupted in situ experiments. Most in situ CT experiments involving compression or tension require a stepped approach where the load is stopped between data acquisitions. This creates a non-realistic situation and unreliable results, especially in cases where relaxation of the sample will occur. Through dedicated hardware and software design, TESCAN is the only company providing continuous acquisition capabilities for dynamic imaging applications on all of its micro-CT systems. This lab-based technique will provide new insights for researchers in many disciplines and will result in new breakthroughs in understanding the 3D behaviour of complex samples undergoing physical change.
