Personally, I thought it was a big step up from Aftermath! Really interesting twist on the established TBDM sound, letting things breathe more and showing what the boys can do with a mid-tempo groove. Absolute perfection with the Knight/Ellis/Knight trade-off solo section as well. The harmonic choices at the end are so deliciously clever! I’d be very curious to hear Brandon and Ryan talk about what they were thinking there. Transcription included, as I've been doing with my solo videos lately. 🎼 Some music theory nerd speculation for those who are so inclined: While the majority of the solo lives in A minor (letter names adjusted as if we're in E Standard for ease), the FMaj / F♯dim7 / B7sus4 / B7 progression at the end really suggests some secondary dominant action there to my ear, despite the F♯ chord being a diminished seventh. Or maybe the F♯dim7 is actually just a modified F♯min7♭5, and so that whole progression is borrowed from the adjacent key of E minor? Curiously, while the B7 does resolve to an E5 chord, the lead guitar then plays not in E minor, but E phrygian dominant, thus bringing us back to the original key signature that our time in A minor established! What a cool way to come full circle. Do you guys agree with my analysis? Any alternative perspectives? Whatever was going on, it sounds unreasonably killer. So excited to hear the rest of the album!
