The song seems to refer at first simply at life and its meaning, with a picture of a young person (25 yo) looking confused and lost. We discover later in the lyrics that she is screaming "What's going on?" to a system of oppression. A system this person wishes to change and pray God for a revolution. What kind oppression is not entirely clear, but it seems to relate to homophobia and the freedom for gay people to manifest themselves. The band 4 Non Blondes was in fact composed by 4 women, all of them openly lesbian. The song has been a LGBT hymn ever since, even interpreted by Lady Gaga recently.
