Lookout Mountain Incline Railway: Tennessee's Most Scenic Mile

Towering above Chattanooga, Tennessee stands the point of Lookout Mountain. Climbing from the city to the summit is the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway, a funicular with a maximum grade of 72.7%. Although advertised as "America's Most Amazing Mile," the railway is actually just under 4,600 feet long, or 1.4 kilometres. As the cars climb upwards from St Elmo station, the passengers are at first reclining in their seats, slowly pivoting until they are leaning slightly forward and looking out through the roof of the vehicle at the increasingly expansive view of the Tennessee Valley. The station at the top features a three-level observation deck with views into Tennessee and Georgia, and is just a short walk from Point Park, the site of the Civil War Battle of Lookout Mountain.
