How much does it cost to make a comic book? Unfortunately there's no true industry standard for comic book page rates. The value of one's art depends on a myriad of factors, including but not limited to experience, output, location, and many other things that are hard to pin point. I decided to do some research of what people were posting online, as well as conducting a survey to give more information. Based on my experiences I would say I've observed black and white lettered artwork as low as $85 per page, and fully colored and lettered artwork at $125 or above. With a normal comic book averaging 28-32 pages of interior art, this can put the cost of a single issue easily at $3,000 for a modest price, and with a trade paper back being made of 6 issues, it could be a $20,000 investment to make your first graphic novel (that is unless you learn to draw!) Ultimately the circumstances of what a writer is able to pay and what an artist values their work at are totally dependent on the needs of those people. This is not meant to be the definitive example of "how much should a page of artwork cost?" but provide context to the startup costs of what a professional debut really might look like.
