An operating system is a software which performs all the basic tasks like file management, memory management, process management, handling input and output, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers. Some popular Operating Systems include Linux Operating System, Windows Operating System, VMS, OS/400, AIX, z/OS, etc. Following are some of important functions of an operating System. Memory Management Processor Management Device Management File Management Security Control over system performance Job accounting Error detecting aids Coordination between other software and users Following are some of the most widely used types of Operating system. Simple Batch System Multiprogramming Batch System Multiprocessor System Desktop System Distributed Operating System Clustered System Realtime Operating System Handheld System Kernel The kernel is a part of the software. It is like a bridge between the shell and hardware. It is responsible for running programs and providing secure access to the machine’s hardware. The kernel is used for scheduling, i.e., it maintains a time table for all processes. And the types of kernels are listed a follows: Monolithic kernel Microkernels Exokernels Hybrid kernels Shell The shell is a part of the software which is placed between the user and the kernel, and it provides services of the kernel. The shell thus acts as an interpreter to convert the commands from the user to the machine code. Shells present in different types of operating systems are of two types: command-line shells and graphical shells. The command-line shells provide a command-line interface while graphical line shells provide a graphical user interface. Though both shells perform operations, the graphical user interface shells perform slower than the command line interface shells.
