The trail begins at the North Lake Campground and heads west, climbing 2,000 vertical feet over five fairly gentle miles to the summit of Piute Pass. The trail then heads across Humphreys Basin and down along Piute Creek until it reaches the San Joaquin River and the bridge that crosses into Kings Canyon National Park and the John Muir Trail. At this juncture, I met with my good friend, Harmen Hoek, who was about midway through his John Muir Trail thruhike adventure. From Piute Creek we headed south along the JMT and camped for my 1st night along the San Joaquin River. The next morning we continued south along the JMT, fording the river where the bridge had been washed out due to the raging river water after the extensive snow melt, until we reached the junction with the Godard Canyon Trail. From here, we continued west and ascended into Evolution Valley and eventually into Evolution Basin where we made camp for my 2nd night at Wanda Lake. On the final morning, we woke early with the ambitious goal of hiking all the way to the Bishop Pass trailhead due to reports of a wild snow storm expected to hit the Sierra that night. We hiked from Wanda Lake up to the Muir Hut on Muir Pass, enjoyed breakfast and a nice coffee, followed by a beautiful snowy descent down into the epic Le Conte Canyon, where we enjoyed lunch and another nice coffee along the river with trail friends met the day earlier ("Snack" and "Hot Tub" - PCT thru hikers finishing the final section of their 2023 Pacific Crest Trail adventure). From Le Conte Canyon, we departed the JMT and began the long ascent up to Dusy Basin and the summit of Bishop Pass. The views on top of Bishop Pass were some of the best of the entire trek. From the pass it was smooth sailing down to the South Lake trailhead. We headed into Bishop and enjoyed some of the best Mexican food at El Ranchito.
