Aralia: Devils Walking Stick

Today we are going to talk about a plant with a less than favorable name and perhaps, less than favorable garden characteristics. The Devil’s Walking Stick is a thorny specimen that makes quite an impact in the garden with its unusual, umbrella like growth habit and is armed to the teeth with strong spines. This plant is native to the East Coast and prefers moist soil though can tolerate drought. The blooms are attractive with their white/pink panicles, the berries, while poisonous to humans, are enjoyed by the birds, fox, deer and even bears. Deer will browse this plant but it recovers quickly. Aralias are slow growing and will eventually form colonies of suckers and are low maintenance once established. This plant is a splendid native and benefits wildlife and creates an opportunity for you to talk about unusual plants with your friends. Be forewarned, this plant can cause dermatitis if handled with bare hands. Happy planting!
