Royal Special: Charles and Diana in Canada and Japan (1986)

On this day in 1986, ITN broadcast The Prince and Princess of Wales Across the Pacific, a special 25-minute programme covering the royal visits Prince Charles, Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales to Canada and Japan. The Canadian leg of the tour began in the city of Victoria on Vancouver Island where, in a televised speech, Charles introduced the city to his wife. It was the Prince of Wales' ninth visit to Canada. The couple then sailed to the city of Vancouver, where a state banquet was held in their honour by Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. The next day, the Waleses attended the Expo '86 World Fair hosted in Vancouver. It was at Expo '86 that Diana, still struggling with jetlag and having not eaten, fainted. Andrew Morton's biography of Diana describes a weary Diana telling Charles “Darling, I think I’m about to disappear," before fainting on the prince. At the time, Diana’s health was a closely and constantly scrutinised by the media, while in private the Princess of Wales was struggling with despressive episodes as well as chronic bulimia. Though she was escorted from Expo '86, the princess would only get an hour's rest before attending another state banquet that evening. The next day, Charles and Diana left for Japan. Starting in Kyoto, the couple enjoyed a peaceful beginning to their tour with a visit to the ancient Buddhist Temple of Shisendo, where the pair took part in a tea-taking ceremony before Diana tried on a kimono. The Zen Buddhist temple of Tōfuku-ji was the last engagement in Kyoto before the pair travelled on to Tokyo. The Japanese capital welcomed the Prince and Princess of Wales with an enormous street parade, the couple riding standing up in an open-topped car. Later, Prince Charles addressed the National Diet, Japan's parliament. In his speech, he called for greater cultural exchange to improve understanding between the two countries. Charles and Diana were then treated to a display of Kabuki, the classical form of Japanese theatre that mixes dramatic performance and traditional dance. After the Kabuki came Sumo wrestling – one of the biggest spectator sports in Japan. Watching from the box, lipreaders picked up Diana commenting on the size of the competitors. That evening, the Wales attended yet another banquet in their honour, hosted by Japan's Emperor Hirohito in the Imperial Palace. #Charles #Diana #PrincessDiana #DianaPrincessOfWales #PrincessOfWales #PrinceCharles #PrinceOfWales #KingCharles #KingCharlesIII #CharlesIII #Japan #Canada #RoyalTour #RoyalFamily #Diana To license the footage featured in this clip, follow the link below: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/videos/...
