When Khuswant Singh was a small boy living in a village, his grandmother took care of all his needs. She would wake him up, prepare him for school, accompany him, and even help him with his lessons. She was the sole caregiver, mentor, and guide in this period. However, when they moved to the city, narrator joined an English school and his grandmother's role in his upbringing diminished. She could no longer go with him to school or assist with his English studies and other subjects she couldn't understand. This change distressed her, especially when she discovered that the school focused on music instead of religious teachings, which she disapproved of.
