Shimon Peres getting into car STORYLINE: Leading figures in Israeli politics expressed their faith in Israeli democracy and support for the acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Friday, after the serious deterioration in Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's condition. "The Israeli democracy is a strong one, it is strong enough to face this crisis," Labor leader Amir Peretz told AP Television, before adding that he had "decided as the leader of the Labor party to give the acting Israeli Prime Minister (Olmert) all the support that he needs to get through this period." Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Shimon Peres said on Friday that he hoped every citizen would support Ehud Olmert and that the peace process would continue despite Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's deteriorating condition. "I hope that the continuation of the peace process and the attempts to bring an end to terrorism will be continued in full speed," said Peres. Peres, a political ally of the prime minister, spoke after a meeting with acting Prime minister Ehud Olmert in Jerusalem, during which they received news that Sharon had been rushed into the operating theatre. Sharon underwent immediate surgery after a brain scan revealed a rise in intracranial pressure and some bleeding in his brain. Doctors have not elaborated on Sharon's condition, but an aide to Shimon Peres said the veteran Israeli politician's staff was told that Sharon's situation is "not good." The aide spoke on condition of anonymity because only Peres' spokesman was authorised to speak to the media. The surgery on Friday followed a seven-hour operation Sharon underwent on Thursday morning after he suffered a massive brain haemorrhage.
