Indic Knowledge Systems - Social Sciences - Aravindan Neelakandan -

Indic Knowledge Systems and the Emerging Worldview - Social Sciences - Aravindan Neelakandan - CIS Talks In this Talk, the speaker discusses the importance of using classical Indic frameworks rather than western frameworks to understand Indian society. The speaker informs us that Indic frameworks provide a better vision not just for the for study of complex social phenomenon in India but for the study of indigenous communities across the world ranging from the Australian aboriginals to African tribes. Yet, surprisingly, it is the western anthropological frameworks that dominate social science textbooks in India. For instance, the speaker cites an ancient Tamil poem to illustrate that there is no difference between the so called ‘tribal’ goddess and the so called ‘Brahmanical’ goddess. Also, whenever there is social disharmony, the goddess manifests herself. This is why the same mother goddess has been invoked time and again by various communities in India whether it was Guru Gobind Singh’s invocation of Chandi or Shivaji’s invocation of Bhawani. Yet modern sociologists deny the pan-Indian presence of the mother goddess. Similarly, modern sociologists use western frameworks to map modern scientific discoveries onto classical Hindu literature. Interestingly, the classical Hindu literary tradition itself provides the framework to analyse the classical Hindu texts. For instance, Tirumular (an ancient Tamil philosopher) provides a framework to understand the Puranas by informing us that the Puranas are not just historical texts but tools that operate as inner maps that help us navigate the inner world of our consciousness. on the whole then, the speaker reminds us that our civilizational heritage, which is more than 5000 years old, provides an excellent framework with which to understand our society and culture.
