I have earlier tested why I get an error message saying "Compass calibration required" when I take off from a manhole. This happened only during night, not at daytime. I did more tests with an ordinary compass, and it was clear that the distortion was significant. Case closed - do not take off from metal objects. If it just was that easy! I did a test of night camera setting at home the other day, and noticed I got "Compass calibration required". I moved the drone away and the message disappeared. I then come to think of a flight a few days ago; I was far out into the forest and noticed that my online maps acted silly (just checking to see if I was on the correct peak). I checked two maps and they showed me a totally different location from where I knew I was. I then used Magnetometer and measured between 50-60 microTesla on where I planned to launch the drone. I moved 15-20 meters away, then the microTesla values were approx. 40. I had therefore reason to believe that the rock base I was standing on either had iron or magnetic properties (doing orienteering in these forests for many years, I know that this may happen and you can't trust the compass in those areas, but I did not know about this one). I therefore tested this at daytime, and the compass show distortion and the microTesla values are 50-70 in that area, but no warning. How safe is it to take off when the compass isn't right? - Easy answer, probably not safe, but why don't I get a warning at daytime?
