Fishing below a wild weir pool on the River Thames

It's September and following the first proper downpour after a dry August I decide to head for a stretch of the River Thames just below a big weir pool. The river is up a touch and I have only my third attempt at fishing this magnificent river - and also my third attempt at catching a big fish from a big river! The Thames is renowned for large fish of all species, but I target barbel and chub using much heavier gear than I'm used to fishing on rivers - carp rods, strong line and big, smelly baits to try and tempt a whacker! Whether I succeed or not is another matter but, for those who prefer a bit of float fishing, I also enjoy a couple of hours trotting on the pin for the river's lovely roach.
