Direct to plate Photopolymer gravure from start to finish!

This is a video that shows how we make direct to plate photopolymer gravure prints from start to finish. The video is mostly from my point of view which lets you check out the process as it's happening. The process takes place over a few days. Scroll down for time markers... 0:00 We start with a nozzle test on the 10 shaded Piezography monochromatic pigment ink set on an Epson Pro 9900 printer. 00:20 The image is printed from Photoshop using our unique printer driver. 00:29 The printer's platen gap is set to widest and an unexposed plate is inserted using the sheet fed mode and printed. 01:20 The printed plate is adhered to the top of our exposure unit and flipped towards the UV light source and exposed. 02:15 The plate is gently developed in 70ƒ water, blotted dry, air dried, and heated to 130ƒ for 30 minutes before receiving another 100 units of UV light to harden it. 05:06 Printmaking paper is torn to size, a small pencilmark is made to differentiate the back of the sheet from the front. 06:10 The paper is soaked briefly and then packed in plastic overnight to allow the moisture to permeate each sheet evenly throughout. 07:50 Ink is carefully mixed by weight. 12:31 The plate is hand inked and wiped. 17:14 The paper sat for two days and does not need calendaring to draw out any excess moisture. The plate gets printed. 20:40 Plate and ink slab clean up! 22:23 The damp prints are dried in our print flattener. If you have questions - ask away!
