Upgrade announced for Western Australia's Henderson Defence Precinct

The Western Australia government and the federal government have signed a cooperation deal to establish the Henderson Defence Precinct - paving the way for a multi-billion dollar upgrade to the shipyard. Over three years, $127 million will be spent on initial feasibility studies and immediate enabling works, including a breakwater extension. Two new graving dry docks will eventually be constructed on the site to build surface combatant vessels and maintain Australia's AUKUS fleet of nuclear-powered submarines. The Commonwealth will take over ownership from Western Australia to bolster security at the precinct. The project is touted as the largest naval maintenance hub in the southern hemisphere.
