Timecodes: 0:00 - Intro 1:05 - Overview of the sections 1:40 - Bare minimum to qualify for NIW 3:13 - How to evaluate your chance for approval 3:33 - Top 10 must-have items in your petition 5:37 - Review of my petition as an example 6:42 - Outro Further reading on items in section 2: Research articles/books You can print and attach your GoogleScholar page and first few pages of your article/book to your petition as a proof for your research article/books. It is recommended that you highlight your name with a marker on the first page of your articles/book chapters. It is preferred that the articles have been published in the last 3 years of filing the petition. Citations: You can attach and print your GoogleScholar page to show how many citations you have for each of your publications. An independent citation is a citation in which none of the authors in the work citing you are a co-author in your work being cited. Letters of recommendation (LOR): You can either draft LORs yourself or have them drafted by your immigration attorney. An independent letter of recommendation means the person who is recommending you has not worked with you directly in the past. For example, an LOR from your supervisor at work or your advisor at graduate school is considered dependent because you have directly worked with them, but a letter from an expert in your field who you have never worked with is considered independent. Patent/technology transfer: Having patents is especially helpful if you are in industry and can’t publish your work due to confidentiality agreements, etc. A copy of the first few pages of the patent application would be good enough as a proof. If your patent is being used with any third-party, you can have them sign a letter to confirm it and then attach that letter with your petition. Government funding: If any of your projects or publications/patents have been supported by US government institutes such as NIH, NSF, US Army, DARPA, BARDA, etc, it would be great to mention that in your petition. You can either include a signed letter from the funding agency that supported your work or simply print out the acknowledgement section at the end of any resulting publication from your work that mentions where your funding came from. Reviewer experience: Sometimes a journal/conference might invite you to review and judge a submitted work for them. In that case, a printout of the email sent to you by the editor of that journal inviting you to review or a thank-you email at the end, once you complete reviewing that work, could be a good proof. International/national Award: Any international or national awards for example a fellowship award given to students with good academic credentials. A copy of the award receipt or related emails can be helpful to your petition. You can also include some background related to that award and mention how competitive it is. These are usually accessible on the website of the committee or society that grants that award. Media coverage about your work: If there are websites or other media press that have written articles about your work specifically and have mentioned your name, it would be helpful to print out those pages and include them in your petition (with your name highlighted with a marker). Professional membership: Membership in certain clubs related to your scientific work which have requirements to get into. For example, IEEE, Institution of Mechanical Engineers (UK-based), or American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). A printout of the membership account/profile is a good proof. Conference presentation & invited talk: Conference presentations usually carry less weight than journal articles. But in certain fields, for example computer science and machine learning, there are top notch conferences that are very hard to get into (e. g. CVPR, ECCV, etc.). A printout of the conference paper/presentation and the agenda for the conference are helpful to your petition.
