The Arts Page | Segment | The art of Ho-Chunk Black Ash Basketry

The Ho-Chunk tradition of weaving baskets is not as old as one might think. It began in the early 1800's after a Ho-Chunk woman had a dream that showed her how to cut down, strip a black ash tree then weave those strips into baskets. By the 1820's, Ho-Chunk baskets were sought after commodities that brought people far and wide to Wisconsin and the Midwest. Right now at the Museum of Wisconsin Art, they are exhibiting these fine works of art in a exhibit called, "Weaving a Legacy: Ho-Chunk Black Ash Basketry." These unique creations come in all different shapes, sizes, colors and designs. With the threat of the infamous emerald ash borer, this proud tradition could very well become lost so it's important to preserve and appreciate this art form while we can.
