Fourth Randoli Perahara 2024

The Kandy Esala Perahera is one of Sri Lanka's most grand and culturally significant festivals, held annually in Kandy, the historic capital of the central highlands. The 2024 Esala Perahera, continuing this time-honored tradition, is a dazzling display of the island's rich cultural heritage, bringing together religious devotion, pageantry, and community spirit. The fourth Randoli Perahera, which is among the highlights of this festival, captures the grandeur and spiritual significance of the event, leaving a lasting impression on all who witness it. The Esala Perahera is celebrated in honor of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, housed in the Temple of the Tooth, or Sri Dalada Maligawa, in Kandy. The festival typically spans ten days, culminating in the grand procession, known as the Randoli Perahera, which is held over five nights. Each night, the procession grows in size, magnificence, and spiritual intensity, with the fourth Randoli Perahera marking a significant moment in the festival. The fourth Randoli Perahera, which is one of the last two processions before the festival's conclusion, is an event of immense scale and splendor. As the penultimate parade, it carries a deep sense of anticipation and reverence. Thousands of devotees, both locals and tourists, gather to witness the spectacle, which embodies the pinnacle of traditional Sri Lankan pageantry. The procession is led by the traditional drummers, known as ‘hewisi,’ whose rhythmic beats set the pace for the entire parade. These skilled musicians play an array of traditional instruments, including the ‘getaberaya’ (a type of drum), ‘daula’ (a smaller drum), and ‘thalampata’ (a pair of cymbals), creating an intoxicating soundscape that resonates through the streets of Kandy. The drummers are followed by hundreds of dancers, including ‘ves’ dancers, ‘naiyandi’ dancers, and fire-dancers, each performing intricate and highly stylized movements that have been passed down through generations. Central to the Perahera is the majestic sight of elephants, which are adorned in elaborate and brightly colored garments. These elephants, led by the majestic tusker carrying the replica of the Sacred Tooth Relic, are a symbol of reverence and spiritual significance. The tusker’s appearance, covered in a gold and silver cloth with a golden canopy, adds an ethereal quality to the procession, as it makes its way through the streets under the light of the full moon. One of the most captivating aspects of the fourth Randoli Perahera is the involvement of the four devales (shrines) dedicated to the guardian gods of Sri Lanka: Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama, and Pattini. Each devale has its own procession, which joins the main Perahera, creating a unified display of devotion and cultural pride. These processions are led by the Basnayake Nilames, the lay custodians of the devales, who are dressed in traditional attire, reflecting their esteemed positions in society. As the fourth Randoli Perahera proceeds, the atmosphere in Kandy is electric, with the air filled with the sounds of drums, the clattering of dancers' feet, and the murmured prayers of devotees. The procession moves with a sense of purpose and rhythm, a testament to the meticulous planning and coordination that goes into this grand event. The streets are lined with spectators, many of whom have traveled from across the island and beyond, eager to partake in this centuries-old tradition. The fourth Randoli Perahera is not just a religious procession but also a celebration of Sri Lanka's cultural heritage. It serves as a reminder of the island's rich history, the enduring power of its traditions, and the deep connection between the people and their faith. The 2024 Kandy Esala Perahera, particularly the fourth Randoli Perahera, is a vivid reflection of the nation's spiritual identity, leaving an indelible mark on all who experience it.
