[Anchor Lead] So-called zero-energy homes are getting a lot of attention these days. These homes refer to environment-friendly houses that emit no greenhouse gases. Such green housing helps preserve the environment and saves people money on electricity. [Pkg] Roughly 120 households comprise this housing complex measuring around 10,000 square meters. All these homes are zero-energy houses that are not supplied with outside power. Energy loss is reduced by improving insulation, through such means as installing blinds outside the windows. The homes supply their own electricity with solar and geothermal power generation. [Soundbite] Seo Il-yeong(Facility Team Supervisor) : "Underground caves are very cool even in summer. Likewise, cool air from underground is supplied to each home for cooling." A test showed that, using the same amount of electricity, a zero-energy home can keep its air conditioner running around the clock, while an ordinary home can only do so for less than four hours. This demonstrates that the green homes use just one-sixth the power consumed in ordinary ones. Residents actually lived in this zero-energy house and added up a year's worth of electricity bills. The costs added up to just half the amount of ordinary apartments, saving one million won per household. Also, starting three years later, all public buildings will have to be built in a zero-energy fashion, and the same rule will be applied to all new buildings eight years later. [Soundbite] Prof. Lee Myung-ju(Myongji Univ.) : "When it's institutionalized, the government should provide subsidies so that high-end materials can be produced locally." The global zero-energy building construction market is expected to reach 1,500 trillion won roughly a decade from now. Experts point out that now is the time to make aggressive investments in the field.
