Friends That Hike - Mount Whitney (2019)

10.06.2019 Mount Whitney(Tumanguya) Day Hike: Distance: 22 miles Elevation Gain: 6,145’ Highest Point: 14,505’ Lowest Point: 8,360’ Oscar and I left LA and drove up to Lone Pine Saturday night at 9pm and we arrived at the Whitney Portal at 12:30am Sunday morning. After throwing on some layers and getting our packs ready we started our hike up at 1am. Aside from being a little chilly there was absolutely no wind. Less than a mile in I ended up removing my puffy and hiked most of the way up to Trail Camp in my base-layer. The skies were clear, there was no wind, and whenever we took a break we would turn off our headlamps and look up to the sky in awe. It was the most perfect night to hike. As we were making our way up we ran into a handful of hikers coming down and a few deer at Outpost Camp, other than an occasional stream here and there the trails were absolutely quiet. It’s was so quiet that even the quietness was loud. If any of you are familiar with the Whitney Trail(circus route) it’s a pretty straightforward and well marked trail all the way to the summit. There is also plenty of water sources so there is no need to carry a lot of water. I only brought 1.5 liters and filtered when needed. Surprisingly we were making good time considering that we were day hiking Whitney on zero hours of sleep. We made it to the base of the 99 switchbacks in 3 hours. From here we were able to see a line of headlamps starting to form and making there way up the switchbacks. Catching a glimpse of the sunrise on Whitney is such a treat I’m glad to know that we weren’t the only crazy hikers out here. We decided to take a little break at Trail Camp, it was cold. At this point I was ready for bed. The fatigue just hit me like a freight train but I knew I had to muster up and give it everything I had to the top. It’s not everyday you get to see the sunrise up there, but it’s also not everyday that you day hike Whitney on no sleep. The more I got tired the more I started not caring about the sunrise, but I wasn’t about to let this mental game win. I just took it one step and at time, took the little breaks I needed, and sure enough we made it to Trail Crest. This was the only windy section of this hike, but to be able to witness the alpenglow from here was absolutely worth every sleep deprived step. (At the cable section there is a little bit of ice which can be easily avoided by stepping on the boulders at the edge of the trail.) From here it was just another 2 miles to the summit of Tumanguya. After passing the windows and getting a glimpse of the valley below on our right and Sequoia/Kings Canyon to our left we came across a small snow field on the back side of Whitney before making the final push up. I was able to pass over this without traction devices or my poles. When we made it to the summit there wasn’t a cloud in site and still there was zero wind. It was the most perfect day I’ve ever experienced on top of Whitney. It was so perfect that Oscar took a 2 hour nap on a boulder. I honestly didn’t want to leave. Those 2 hours up there was probably one of the best 2 hours of my life ever spent. It took us 7 hours to summit, and after feeling recharged by the sun and Oscar’s 2 hour nap we made a mad dash all the way down for some burgers. All in all the trail had a good amount of people, not too crowded but don’t expect to get that feeling of solitude. Hence which is why I call it the circus route. The great thing about hiking up to Whitney later in the season is the crowds start to dwindle but you do have to deal with colder temps. Not my favorite way up to Whitney but I’ll take it.
