Review: SmallRig 4324 3-section overhead camera boom arm

Amazon Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/3TbYsUW Price as reviewed: $70 SmallRig Overhead 3-Section Desktop Camera Bracket, Damping Boom Arm Desk Mount with 360° Rotatable Ball Head, Tabletop C Clamp, Max Load to 4.4lbs / 2kg for Photography Videography Live Stream - 4324 This boom arm is heavy duty (weights 45 oz, 1.2 kg) but well made. Most of the metal parts are aluminum, and the plastic knobs are solid and well made with rubber grips. The provided plastic "spring grip" cell phone adapter (with cold shoe attachment point and GoPro style mount point) is the least "professional" feeling part of the kit, and even it's good for a plastic cell phone gripper. The end of the arm has a metal ball head which will rotate in place and allow you to adjust the ball, but holds both the ball and the current rotation position once you tighten it up. The desk gripper has almost a 3" jaw size, and is plenty wide to fit over curved table edges. [But if you have metal brackets close to the edge of your table, it may not fit all the way under...] The two arm joints take considerable force to move (even when unlocked) and have a damping action on vibrations. When you lock them, it will easily hold a heavy camera in place. So if you want to mount a large DSLR (or even just a big light) overhead, this guy works well, but it takes a bit of effort to set the joints up and adjust it where you want it, so it's not perfect for just quickly mounting a cell phone over your table and then sliding the mount out of the way. I feel it is a good value for the money, but if you just need a small/light boom to hold a cell phone, I actually prefer this Alight unit for half the price: (Amazon Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/3Xn054G )
