Mae West was an American actress, singer, playwright, screenwriter, comedian, and sex symbol whose entertainment career spanned seven decades. Born in a working-class section of Brooklyn, she first entered the world of "show business" at the age of five entertaining church locals. She began performing professionally in vaudeville at the age of fourteen. Eventually she moved on to Broadway. She encountered many censorship problems during her career and was even prosecuted on morals charges in 1927. Known for her lighthearted bawdy double entendres, and breezy sexual independence, West made a name for herself in vaudeville and on the stage in New York City before moving to Hollywood to become a comedian, actress, and writer in the motion picture industry, as well as appearing on radio and television. She became a show-business giant, a personality so distinctive she transformed forever the way women and sex would be presented on stage, in films, radio, TV and cabarets around the world. For her contributions to American cinema, the American Film Institute named West 15th among the greatest female stars of classic American cinema. Mae West was a maverick of her time challenging censorship standards with her bawdy, seductive characters. Throughout the 1930s, she appeared in such films as I'm No Angel, She Done Him Wrong and Klondike Annie. At 33 years old, she wrote, produced, directed and starred in her first Broadway play entitled "Sex," a 1926 production deemed so obscene that she landed in jail for it. She was the queen of double entendres on and off screen, delivering some of the best-remembered quips in movie history. In 1932, Paramount Pictures courageously signed up the Broadway star. It was quite a feat at the time, for she was already considered a "mature" actress, but West looked younger than her 38 years Despite her box office pull, her blunt sexuality onscreen kept rubbing the censors the wrong way. In 1934, censors - in care of the infamous Hayes Code of onscreen ethics - began deleting overtly sexy lines and scenes from her films. To fight back, West increased the number of double entendres, hoping that the censors would delete the most offensive lines and miss the subtler ones.
