If you have ever wondered where the Dodo lived or what Mauritius looked like before the arrival of humans, then visit Ebony Forest! This is a great escape from the beaches for a couple of hours and I will bring you all in the mountains and greenery of Chamarel, home to some of the most endangered species in the World. “The Ebony Forest!” I know that some of you are not familiar about this place, if where it is exactly located. So now, I will show you where you can find this magical country! Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, about 2,000 kilometres off the southeast coast of the African continent. And the people here are multiethnic, multi-religious, multicultural and multilingual. Mauritius is known for its varied flora and fauna, with many species endemic to the island. The island was the only known habitat of the extinct dodo, a flightless bird, descendants of a type of pigeon, which settled in Mauritius over four million years ago, along with several other avian species, and was made extinct by human activities relatively shortly after the island's settlement. And we are very lucky coz “Ebony Forest” here in Mauritius is saving SOME OF THE MOST ENDANGERED FLORA AND FAUNA IN THE WORLD. Their conservation team is helping reverse the impacts of habitat destruction and invasive species to provide a refuge for the island’s threatened wildlife and began the heroic and enormous task of weeding, growing and planting native and endemic plants.   The Ebony Forest ecotourism Team’s mission is to save endangered species in Mauritius, educate and raise awareness about the value of biodiversity. They are a group of young men and women from Chamarel and the south of Mauritius, eager to share their passion for nature and the outdoors. The conservation team of local men and women are the real heroes in their mission. They endure the heat, rain and steep slopes to do battle with invasive plants. It can be a discouraging task as exotic light-loving weeds are persistent. The battle is won when the plants that they nurtured in the nursery and planted grow tall. The native vegetation starts to naturally shade out the exotic plants and a native forest is recreated.   They offered different activities for you to experience here inside the Ebony Forest. They have the classic tour that will take you inside the forest, plant a tree and leave a legacy in an endemic forest, bird watching and SEE SOME OF THE WORLD’S RAREST BIRDS AND WILDLIFE DURING YOUR ENDEMIC BIRD-WATCHING TOUR, Take a trek with one of their experienced guides and discover how the island’s geological and colonial history has shaped the surrounding landscapes. We’re so lucky at this time coz there’s no other people here except us, the safari driver and the guides. Sublime Viewpoint is my most favorite here in Mauritius. I’m very surprised and shocked when I reach the top of this mountain. The views are absolutely stunning here. It’s great to relax and watch the changing colours and transformation of the west coast from the private vantage point of this nature reserve. It feels like I am on top of the world.
