India: Delhi's Air Quality Falls To Very Poor Category After Diwali; People Defy Ban on Firecrackers The air quality in India's capital New Delhi deteriorated on November 1 after people ignored a ban on firecrackers during the Diwali celebrations the day before. The continuous use of firecrackers led to significant noise pollution and filled the capital with thick smoke, as residents disregarded the restrictions well into the night. The System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) reported that Delhi's air quality index (AQI) surged to 359, categorising it as "very poor." Neighbouring areas like Noida, Gurgaon, and Ghaziabad also faced severe pollution issues. According to an analysis by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, the city is projected to experience peak pollution levels from November 1 to 15.
