1966 Teener League All-Star Team National Champs - Elgin Sports Hall of Fame Team Recognition - 2023

The 1966 Elgin VFW Teener League All-Star Team, made up of 15 players and coached by Chuck Turner, Jim Payne and Bob Marvin, won the VFW Teener League national championship in Hershey, PA. On their way to the national tournament, Elgin defeated Batavia, Skokie and Woodstock in the state tournament held at Trout Park in Elgin. From there, the team competed in the area tournament where Elgin won three games and defeated West Allis, WI for the area championship. The national tournament in Hershey hosted eight teams in a double elimination competition. First, Elgin defeated the Del City, OK team 8 - 4 to advance to the semi-finals. In that round, Elgin beat the team from Pierre, SD 3 - 0 to advance to the double elimination championship. Elgin won the first game against Lebanon Valley, PA 2 - 1 to snap Lebanon Valley's 18 game tournament unbeaten streak. After losing to Lebanon Valley in the second game, Elgin defeated Lebanon 3 - 2 to win the national championship. Pitcher Jim Kasules was named most valuable player of the tournament, while Terry Whipple and Jim Capps were the leading hitters. The City of Elgin celebrated the team's championship by holding a parade and a banquet in the team's honor.
