Whistler-Blackcomb | Blackcomb Gondola

Blackcomb was approaching seven years of operations, with their only base area being Base II, essentially just a large parking lot and some facilities. In 1987, they opened the Upper Village, with the relocated Skidder Chair, a Yan converted to a triple called Magic Chair, and two new Doppelmayr high speed quads. The lower was Wizard Express, which had bubbles, and the other was Solar Coaster Express, which did not. They were connected with a parking rail at the top of Wizard and the bottom of Solar Coaster, and ran in both winter and summer. Because the lifts were the exact same model, half of the bubble chairs were moved to Solar Coaster, and half of the regular chairs went to Wizard. This gave summer guests the option to ride in an open chair during sunny days, and in an enclosed bubble chair during rainy or stormy weather. When heading up to the Horstman Glacier for summer skiing, Wizard and Solar Coaster provided part of the journey, where one would then continue to a bus, and then a ride up 7th Heaven Express. Because of this use, the open air chairs had racks on them to hold skis, just like what 7th Heaven had. Unfortunately, summer skiing has been ceased since 2020, when the Horstman T-Bar was removed. In 2007, Solar Coaster Express had its top drive terminal moved downhill to make room for the new Peak 2 Peak gondola. Seeing that Whistler had a gondola going to the Roundhouse Lodge, it was decided to have a gondola connecting Upper Village to Rendezvous. In 2018, Wizard Express and Solar Coaster Express were removed and replaced with a gondola, containing a mid-station, the third lift to have a mid-station at the entire resort. Blackcomb Gondola is a Doppelmayr 10-passenger gondola. The capacity is a huge 4,000 PPH with a design speed of 1,200 FPM. It was not running anywhere near that speed in this recording, at ~885 FPM, dumbing down capacity to a little below 3,000 PPH. At full capacity, however, Stage II of Blackcomb Gondola has the highest VTFH (Vertical Transport Feet per Hour) in North America, at 9,056,000. Whistler-Blackcomb originally wanted to find a way to not remove Solar Coaster Express while putting in the gondola, but could not find an alignment that would work. Blackcomb Gondola's mid-station sits lower than the top terminal of Wizard and bottom terminal of Solar Coaster, but not low enough to make it accessible from Excalibur Gondola. Speaking of which, Excalibur Gondola had two of its towers re-profiled so it could cross underneath Blackcomb Gondola. While this lift has technically made a bunch of terrain on Blackcomb unlappable because one has to take their skis off and wait for an empty cabin, this lift provided a needed replacement for the previous aging lifts, and will continue carrying people as the biggest VTFH lift in North America for a long time.
