Bengal Panchayat election 2018: Voting begins amid tight security, incidents of violence reported

The West Bengal Panchayat elections began amid tight security. The rural polls began at 7 am today and will continue till 5 pm. 621 zilla parishads, 6157 panchayat samitis and 1,827 gram panchayats will go to polls. The counting of votes will be held on May 17. Around 46,000 personnel of West Bengal Police have been deployed, besides a total of 12,000 Kolkata police, around 1500 security personnel from the state. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has claimed that 14 TMC supporters were killed in the violence that took place in the state. Meanwhile, BJP also alleged that 52 of its supporters have died too. The Supreme Court had set aside Calcutta High Court order that had asked West Bengal Election Commission to accept nominations rural polls e-mails on May 10. The nominations were filed from April 2 to 9 but they were again filed on April 23. The Supreme Court had earlier said that it was ‘disappointed’ over the ‘unopposed election’ of the ruling TMC for 34 percent seats.
