When Van Damme kicked his way out of Brussels and landed in Hollywood in the late 80s, there was no one quite like him. With muscles that would get a respectful nod from Arnie or Stallone, he combined fighting skills with gymnastic grace. His slow-motion split kick was the stuff of legend, a fusion of martial arts and ballet, that wouldn’t seem out of place on a stage with Tchaikovsky’s Dance of the Sugar Plumb Fairy blaring out, assuming that fairies were so good at kicking people in the head. A former European Karate champion, it was Van Damme that showed us that you could lift serious weights in the gym yet also still be a lighting fast athletic martial artist.
