UNECE SUMS and CSMS Overview

The UNECE Regulation R155 “Cyber Security and Cyber Security Management” (CSMS) demands a thorough cybersecurity process along the entire lifecycle of a vehicle. The related UNECE Regulation R156 “Software Update Management System” (SUMS) facilitates that SW updates and their impact on type approval parameters is visible to the driver and traceable by external authorities, to ensure systematic approval and necessary governance mechanisms. For governance both regulations demand certification of an OEM. The SUMS and CSMS regulations are closely connected, as the SUMS regulation enforces cybersecurity on the software update process while CSMS encompasses all E/E systems, including software.
