Ryan: Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. today on our 2020 Jeep Cherokee, we're going to be taking a look at, and showing you how to install the Curt class three trailer hitch receiver.Compared to some of the other hitches, the thing I like most about this one is the way it's going to look. For the most part it's going to be completely hidden, the only thing you're going to be able to see is this receiver tube opening. In my opinion, that really helps give us more of a factory look to it. It's going to sit up nice and tight against the bottom of our Jeep, so it's really going to help with ground clearance, really not going to take away from that, and the receiver tube is going to sit kind of just behind our bumper here, so it's going to give us some pretty decent bumper clearance. That's really good because many of our Jeep customers plan on using their hitch to do a little bit of everything, towing and even those accessories, so that extra clearance is really going to come in handy when we go to use an accessory, particularly the folding ones.Since this is a class three hitch, it's going to give us a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. That's a really common size, and we should be able to find just about any accessory that we would want to use. It's going to have a reinforced collar for extra strength. I think it looks pretty good too. It's going to have that standard five eighths pinhole. Keep in mind, a pin and clip does not come included, but if you need one you can pick it up here at etrailer. Going to have loop style safety chain openings, which aren't huge, but they do give us enough room to be able to use just about any size hook that we might have.As far as the hitch's weight capacities go, you're going to have some pretty impressive ratings. As far as the maximum gross tongue weight rating, it's going to be 675 pounds. That's going to be the amount of weight that's pushing down on the hitch. It's a pretty high number, so you should be able to use just about any size bike rack or cargo carrier that you would want to.As far as the maximum gross trailer weight rating goes, it's going to be 4,500 pounds. That's going to be the amount of weight that's pulling on the hitch. That's the weight of your trailer plus anything that you might have on it. Now, this can be used with the weight distribution system, which is a separate component, but if you do use that, the weight capacities do increase, maximum gross tongue weight rating goes up to 750 pounds, and the maximum gross trailer weight rating increases to 5,500 pounds. I do recommend it's never a bad idea to check with your Jeep's owner's manual to make sure your Cherokee can pull that much weight safe. Now if you do plan on doing a little bit of towing, I would recommend picking up some trailer wiring, that way the lights on your trailer will sync up with the lights on your Cherokee and you'll be safe and legal. Now I'm going to give you a couple of measurements, and you're going to use these to help figure out which hitch mounted accessories to get. From the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening, that's going to be about 12 and a half inches, so chances are pretty good, if you do plan on doing some towing you're going to need to get a ball mount with a rise. From the center of the hitch pin to the edge of the rear bumper, that's going to be about seven inches, and you're going to use that measurement to help figure out that if any folding accessories you might have can be stored in that upright position without contacting the bumper. At the end of the day a hitch you really can't go wrong with. It's going to look great, be versatile, and be able to handle just about anything you want to throw it.As far as the installation goes, it's really not too bad. It is a little involved, but everything's pretty easy to get to and straight forward. Speaking of which, let's go ahead and put it on together now.To begin our install we're going to be underneath the back of our Jeep here, and we're going to need to lower our exhaust. Before we do that, what I like to do is take a strap, just run it from side to side, that way when we do lower it, the remaining portion of it will have a little bit of support here.To give us enough room to get our hitch installed, we're actually going to completely remove this muffler assembly here towards the back. If you look right here, we're going to have a band that holds your muffler assembly to our mid-pipe here. We're going to loosen this up right here using a 15 millimeter socket. That band is kind of conn
