Are Dreams Real?

This video explores Epicurus' fascinating belief that our dreams and perceptions are real, driven by a materialistic philosophy and how this idea was central to his philosophy of living a happier life. 📌 Timestamps: 00:00 - Senses are infallible 00:49 - What is reality made of? 01:41 - How we perceive and why dreams are real? 02:48 - Gods and dreams 03:54 - Doubts? All perceptions, he claimed, are caused by tiny atomic replicas that activate our senses. Did he really believe this? Maybe, but his entire philosophy was aimed at achieving a happier life. We dream of gods, and if our dreams are real, then gods must be real too. The gods of Epicurus were conceived to represent the ideal of a life well lived. Footage: Thanks to creators from PEXELS.COM! Maryan D: https://pixabay.com/users/marmixer-67... In ancient Greece there was a raging battle of wits between Plato and Aristotle. Plato posed that we have innate knowledge and so when we think we learn something new, we’re just recollecting what we already know. Aristotle, on the other hand, suggested that we derive knowledge by observing the outside world and then we form principles and ideas of how things work through reasoning and abstraction. A bit later Epicurus came into the picture similarly viewing that knowledge is derived from the outside world using our senses, according to him these senses were infallible, meaning we always see/hear/smell things how they truly are at that moment in time. This same idea applies to the things we see even when we are dreaming. So, yes, according to Epicurus the things we dream about are real! How the hell is that even possible? To get an answer to this we must look at how Epicurus viewed the world around us. To him everything consisted of two things: atoms and space. All things are made up of atoms like physical objects or emerge from their combinations, like life, mind and so on. These atoms can vary in shape, size and velocity. For example, for something to result in consciousness or sensation the atoms that make this happen must be very specialized, very fine in texture and very rapid in their movement which allows them to set-up a very intricate system of vibrations and interact with other atoms in the body. In addition to our normal sensations Epictetus says that we also have super sensations that do not go through the sense organs but are impinged with images in the mind-atoms themselves. These images enter the mind from space and produce vivid sensations like dreams. And since, again, all sensations are caused by these perfect atomic replicas it means that all sensations show us the truth, and so in this way our dreams are true!
