BirdLife Malta Conservation Officer verbally abused by trapper at Marfa Ridge

On the 7th November 2019, BirdLife Malta Conservation Officer Alice Tribe came across an incident of illegal finch trapping at Marfa Ridge. She called the Administrative Law Enforcement (ALE) police unit, who within 15 minutes of the report being filed, turned up on site. The two ALE officers went onto the site and told her to stay outside on the main road. While the police were inside the property, around 30 minutes later, a trapper (which was identified by BirdLife Malta), approached Alice and started shouting verbal abuse, even threatening to kill her. This video shows what happened next and contains an entire transcript, with the use of captions, of what was said. After this incident, Alice explained to ALE officers what had just happened, and they suggested BirdLife Malta files a report regarding the verbal abuse at Mellieħa Police Station. Another report by BirdLife Malta was filed with the ALE regarding illegal trapping for a protected species. All the video evidence was handed over to police. The trapper was arraigned on Thursday 9th January 2020 in regard to the verbal abuse case, and in court he admitted to the charges brought against him. He was fined a meagre €20. ALE are now expected to press separate charges for illegal trapping. Please note: The video contains foul language which some might find offensive.
