Jantar Mantar is a historic astronomical observatory located in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. It is one of the several observatories built by Maharaja Jai Singh II, who was a Rajput king and a keen astronomer. The Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is the largest and best-preserved among the five observatories constructed by Maharaja Jai Singh II during the 18th century. The term "Jantar Mantar" is derived from the Sanskrit words "Yantra" (instrument) and "Mantra" (formula), and the observatory consists of various architectural and astronomical instruments designed to observe the movements of celestial bodies. The primary purpose of these instruments was to measure time, predict eclipses, and track the positions of stars and planets. Some of the notable instruments at Jantar Mantar in Jaipur include: Samrat Yantra: Also known as the "Supreme Instrument," it is a large sundial that can be used to measure local time with great accuracy. Jai Prakash Yantra: This instrument consists of two concave hemispherical structures with markings and is used for measuring the altitude of celestial bodies. Ram Yantra: It is a set of two large cylindrical structures used to measure the altitude and azimuth of celestial objects. Nadivalaya Yantra: This instrument is used to measure the local solar time and declination of the sun. Kranti Yantra: It is a set of four large hemispherical bowls, each aligned with one of the cardinal directions, and was used to measure the longitude and latitude of celestial bodies. Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the various instruments and marvel at the architectural and astronomical achievements of the past. The site reflects the scientific and technological advancements of its time and serves as a testament to India's rich history in astronomy.
