The second single released from his unfairly criticized Southern Accents album, this is the LP version taken from the US 12" promo. Written by Petty, the single only reached No. 74 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart. Thus making Rebels a significant hit on rock radio, which of course means if it wasn't a pop hit, you will never hear it on the radio nowadays. What a shame! This is one of his greatest singles, both a fervent defense of his southern roots and a cry for freedom. Incredible... I have yet to hear a more impassioned vocal. Everything about the production is perfect, as well it should be! Tom Petty infamously punched a wall and shattered his left hand after becoming frustrated with the arrangement, all for your listening pleasure. Hats off to Tom, he got it right. Enjoy!
