J. Schwantner - "Velocities"

Welcome to Marimba Repertoire Library. Last time I played Velocities was in 2009 for my final KozertExamen diplom at Musikhochschule Detmold - Germany. This is one of my very favorite pieces written for Marimba, and even though i stopped playing marimba repertoire for over a decate, this one stayed in my memory - at least the biggest part of it. I thought to create a non conventional interpretation, and I'm prety sure for most of you it will sound at least strange at first. Too fast, strange sticking etc.. Main goal was, to create a tension throughout the piece, but yet show the very beautiful harmonies and beautiful lines. Tempo should never affect your musicality, tempo can be used as a musical tool. For this recording I used my signature series mallets by Vic Firth , models M284 + M285. These mallets are very heavy, ( starts from 48grams a mallets, and goes up to 58 grams), therefore I don't have to make big movements to achieve high dynamics. On the other hand, because they are heavy , they produce low frequencies, so the high register sounds very round and warm. Back then as a student, it took me approx 5 days to finish this piece, practicing 2 hours a day (only Velocities). I always speak about the importance of sight-reading ability, which save time and eliminates the necessity of momorizing the piece in order to practice it. The memorization process for me comes naturally while I am reading/playing/practicing the piece. This knowledge/tool is an important part of my "effortless playing" approach that I very often speak about. Effortless playing, is a state of mind in combination with knowledge, which allows you to manifest ANY musical idea, even a creazy one. Hope you enjoy my videos.
